Shoppers are ready for AI that helps them decide. Most are not yet ready for AI that buys for them. That gap is the biggest unsolved problem in AI shopping.
Right now, most of commerce is chasing the same idea: an AI agent that shops for you. It finds the product, picks the size, fills the cart, and checks out. You never open a store page.
It’s a big idea, and the money behind it is real. But the data on how people actually shop tells a more careful story.
The market is moving fast
McKinsey estimates AI agents could orchestrate up to $1 trillion in US retail revenue by 2030, and $3 to $5 trillion globally. That’s a forecast, but shopper behavior is already shifting.
Adobe recorded a 693% year-over-year jump in traffic from generative AI tools to US retail sites during the 2025 holiday season. Payment networks, AI labs, and large retailers are all building for it.
So the question is not whether AI will shape how people shop. It already does. The question is which part of shopping people actually want AI to take over.
Shoppers use AI to research, not to buy
When you look at what shoppers let AI do, a clear line appears. They welcome it for research. They hold back when it comes to spending their money.
| Survey | Uses AI to discover or get advice | Not comfortable letting AI buy for them |
| Riskified, Q1 2026 (2,000 US and UK shoppers) | 61.5% have used AI for product discovery | 55% |
| YouGov, Sept 2026 (3,300+ US and UK shoppers) | 20% would take AI recommendations but not let it buy | 53% |
The YouGov study found an even sharper line in fashion. Only 7% of fashion shoppers would let an AI agent buy without their approval.
The message is consistent. People want AI to inform the purchase. They don’t yet want it to make the purchase.
The industry is getting a reality check
In March 2026, OpenAI shut down Instant Checkout, the feature that let people buy directly inside ChatGPT. Its buy button converted at under 1%, against an industry average of 3–4%. Purchases now move to retailer apps or retailer sites.
A month earlier, eBay banned third-party “buy-for-me” agents from its platform without prior authorization. Retailers want to keep their checkout and their customer relationship.
None of this means AI agents are a bad idea. They will get better, and people will trust them with more over time. But the order is off. The industry is automating the last step of shopping before it has solved the step before it: confidence in the decision.
Gen Z feels this gap the most
Gen Z didn’t come online through a search bar. They came online through a phone and a feed. When asked where they most often discover new products, 18- to 27-year-olds put Instagram first at 30.4% and TikTok second at 23.2%. Google came third at 18.8%.
But discovering a product is not the same as buying it. eMarketer found Gen Z shoppers are more careful with purchases and less likely to buy on impulse than older generations.
So the journey usually looks like this. They find something in a 15-second clip. Then they leave the app. They check reviews, look for real opinions, and compare prices across sites.
Our own Gen Z user research showed the same pattern. Finding products was not the hard part. Deciding was.
Social media solved discovery. Retailers solved checkout. The decision in between is still unsolved.
How SyenApp approaches it
We rebuilt SyenApp around that gap. SyenApp isn’t an agent that buys for you. It’s where you decide.
- Spot it anywhere. See something on your feed and bring it to SyenApp.
- See if it’s really trending. Know what’s catching on, and why.
- Check the brand. See whether it has earned trust before you spend.
- Compare. View prices and alternatives side by side, in one place.
- Buy from the brand. Checkout happens on the brand’s own site.
The shopper stays in control. The brand keeps its customer. And nobody has to hand a credit card to a bot to get a better decision.
Trust comes before autonomy
AI agents will keep improving, and people will hand them more of their shopping over time. But that trust has to be earned first, one good decision at a time.
The companies that help a generation decide with confidence will be the ones that generation eventually trusts to buy for them. That’s the layer we’re building.
Discover anywhere. Decide with SyenApp. Buy wherever you want.
